The Malayalam film industry mourns the loss of one of its iconic figures, Mohan Raj, who passed away on October 3, 2024, at the age of 70. Best known for his portrayal of the villainous character “Keerikkadan Jose” in the 1989 Mohanlal-starrer Kireedam, Mohan Raj left an indelible mark on Malayalam cinema with his powerful performances. He had been battling multiple health issues, including Parkinson’s disease and diabetes, and passed away at his residence in Kanjiramkulam, Thiruvananthapuram.

The actor’s career spanned more than three decades, during which he worked in over 300 films, predominantly playing negative roles in Malayalam cinema.

Mohan Raj’s passing has left a significant void in the industry. He was last seen on screen in the 2022 Mammootty-starrer Rorschach, after which his health started to deteriorate. Despite his illness, the actor was known for his humility and dedication to his craft until the very end.

Over the years, Mohan Raj appeared in several noteworthy films, including Uppukandam Brothers (1993), Aaraam Thampuran (1997), Narasimham (2000), and Mayavi (2007). His talent extended beyond Malayalam cinema, as he also ventured into Tamil and Telugu films, making a mark with his powerful screen presence.

Upon hearing the news of his passing, several actors and filmmakers from the Malayalam film industry expressed their condolences. Mohanlal, with whom Mohan Raj shared the screen in Kireedam, penned an emotional note, saying, “Our beloved Keerikkadan Jose has left us. His brilliance in portraying the role opposite me remains etched in my memory. Farewell, my dear friend.”

Mammootty, another industry giant, also paid tribute, acknowledging Mohan Raj’s contributions to Malayalam cinema and the immense respect he garnered from his peers and fans alike. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other political leaders expressed their sorrow, acknowledging the cultural impact of Mohan Raj’s work.

Mohan Raj is survived by his wife Usha and their two daughters, Jaishma and Kaaviya. His family has requested privacy during this time of mourning, as they prepare for the actor’s last rites, which will take place at his residence in Kanjiramkulam.

Mohan Raj’s contribution to Indian cinema, particularly Malayalam, will be remembered for generations. His iconic roles, especially as Keerikkadan Jose, made him a beloved figure, both feared and admired on screen.
